MD 201 is a north/south route in the suburbs of Washington, DC. The Anacostia Freeway (DC 295) becomes MD 201 upon leaving the District of Columbia. It remains a freeway for a short distance into Maryland. Just north of the border, there is an interchange with the John Hanson Highway (US 50). After the interchange, the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (MD 295) begins at MD 201. The freeway then ends, becoming a four-lane divided surface road called Kenilworth Avenue. After crossing the Capital Beltway (I-95/I-495), Kenilworth Avenue becomes Edmonston Road. The MD 201 designation ends after about a mile at Powder Mill Road (MD 212), while Edmonston Road continues north as a local street.
