I-77 is a major north/south highway extending from Columbia, South Carolina, to Cleveland, Ohio. It enters West Virginia from Virginia via the East River Mountain Tunnel, which passes through East River Mountain as its name suggests. A few miles beyond the state line, it becomes the West Virginia Turnpike, the state's main toll highway. In Beckley, I-64 joins I-77 along the turnpike. In Charleston, the turnpike ends, and I-64 splits off to run west toward Huntington. I-77 continues north as a free highway to Parkersburg, where it crosses the Ohio River into Ohio.
