I-95 is a main interstate that runs along the east coast from Florida to Maine. It enters Maryland from Virginia multiplexed with the Capital Beltway (I-495), a circular highway around Washington, DC. North of Washington, I-95 splits off from I-495 and runs northeast to Baltimore. There, it passes under the Patapsco River through the Fort McHenry Tunnel. This tunnel passes under the Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, the site of the battle in the War of 1812 that inspired Francis Scott Key to write our national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner." The tunnel was built instead of a bridge that was originally proposed in order to preserve the historic site. North of Baltimore, I-95 is called the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway, in honor of the former president. It continues northeast to the border with Delaware, where it becomes the Delaware Turnpike.
