DE 896 is the westernmost major north/south route in New Castle County. It begins at Dupont Parkway (US 13) in Middletown as Boyds Corner Road and runs west. After a couple of miles, Boyds Corner Road ends at Summit Bridge Road (DE 71). DE 896 turns north along Summit Bridge Road, following it across the Summit Bridge. At Pulaski Highway (US 40) in Newark, Summit Bridge Road becomes South College Avenue. There is an interchange with the Delaware Turnpike (I-95). Shortly thereafter, DE 896 leaves South College Avenue and forms a loop around the campus of the University of Delaware by following Christina Parkway (DE 4) and Elkton Road, which changes names to become South Main Street. At the end of South Main Street, DE 896 turns north onto New London Road. There are several one-way segments in the vicinity of the intersection with New London Road, so northbound traffic is routed along West Delaware Avenue, South College Avenue, and West Main Street, while southbound traffic is routed along Hillside Road and West Main Street. New London Road continues northwest to the border with Maryland. New London Road continues beyond the state line as MD 896, which cuts the northwest corner of Maryland before turning into PA 896.
