I-291 is a short east/west highway connecticut I-91 to the Wilbur Cross Highway (I-84) in the area just north of Hartford. It crosses the Connecticut River on the Bissell Bridge and then continues a few miles to the east before ending. I-291 was originally planned as a half-beltway around Hartford. It would have continued west of its current western terminus before curving south and then back east to end at I-91 in the area of Rocky Hill. However, most of the planned highway was never built, leaving only the short section north of Hartford that was actually constructed.
